WATERVILLE, Maine – The Thomas College women's lacrosse team earned their first victory of the season in a 10-5 non-conference win over Newbury College on Sunday afternoon at Smith Field.
The Terriers now sit a 1-7 on the season while the Nighthawks move to 1-6.
Thomas took a 3-0 advantage midway through the first half on goals from Kimberly Banks (Swan's Island, Maine), Amira Jones (Chicopee, Mass.), Alexis Felch (Laconia, N.H.). The Nighthawks got on the board on a man-up opportunity with a goal by Sophia Kiasi to cut the lead down to two at the break.
Newbury struck quickly in the second half as Venezia Delgadillo brought her team within one. Thomas cranked up the offense with four unanswered goals, including a pair from Banks to make it a 7-2 game. The two teams finished the half with three goals apiece to finish at 10-5.
Banks led the Terriers with three goals and one assist while causing four turnovers and scooping up seven ground balls. Cassidy West (Vassalboro, Maine) and Felch each chipped in with two goals in the win.
Delgadillo finished with three goals on seven shots for the Nighthawks while picking up three ground balls. Kiasi netted two goals along with an assist while Hannah Gorham caused five turnovers and recorded nine ground balls.
Sydni Collier (Oakland, Maine) earned the win in goal for Thomas, stopping six shots while Keely Molloy made 12 saves in the effort for Newbury.
The Terriers will play at home again on Wednesday as they host Southern Maine.
